Judge's Comments: “Lara” is a sensitive study in subtlety. I am really amazed that an artist can create a beautiful painting that is almost devoid of color, edges or values – and of course “almost” is the operative word. The delicate colors in the skin tones are slight in variety but have an enormous impact on making this painting convincing. I particularly appreciate the slight violet tones on the eyelids and the silvery quality of the light source on the upward facing planes of the face. I feel that this piece shows the artist’s experience in painting from life.
