Garden Landscapes From Life
at the Scottsdale Artists School

March 31 – April 3, 2009 (Tuesday- Friday)
9:00 am to 4:00 pm

This workshop will focus on painting garden landscapes from life.

The class will paint on location for the first two days and during the following two days, Thies will teach course participants how to use their studies to paint larger, more refined finished work back in the studio.

On the first morning Thies will start with a plein air painting demonstration— emphasizing design, color harmony, edges and paint quality.  The goal is for each student to paint at least three small studies on location.

Students will learn the importance of what to paint and what to leave out in order to capture the colors of Nature.

Back in the classroom, Thies will provide individual instruction and demonstrate techniques to help students paint more refined, finished, corner-to-corner oil paintings from their studies.

• Recommended: Read Alla Prima by Richard Schmid and Complete the Color Charts.

TIMOTHY R. THIES is Richard Schmid’s protégé since 1997. He was given a rare invitation to join Mr. Schmid’s painting group in Loveland, CO  and then in Vermont with the Putney Painters for five years. Prior to that he studied privately with Nelson Shanks as his apprentice in Andalusia, PA  and was granted a full scholarship at the National Academy of Design in NYC. He also studied with master artists, Clyde Aspevig, David Leffel, Len Chmiel, Michael Lynch, Jon Zahourek, Ned Jacob and Daniel Greene. Thies's work has been featured in Art of the West, American Artist Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, International Artist, American Art Collector and Workshop Magazine. In addition, Thies has won numerous awards for his landscapes and figurative works. He is represented by Trailside Galleries in Scottsdale, AZ and Jackson, WY, by West Wind Fine Art Gallery soon to be located in the Tucson, AZ area, and by Edgartown Art Gallery on Martha's Vineyard, MA.
