![]() "Shadow Falls" Oil 48"x26" ©Timothy R. Thies Timothy R. Thies was born in Iowa in 1954. Always seeking new natural vistas, and fond of adventure, Thies in 1973 traveled west from Iowa, and was awestruck by the majesty of the Rocky Mountains. It was during this trip that he decided to attend the Colorado Institute of Art. Thereafter he traveled widely throughout America and Europe, and he studied at The National Academy Museum and School of Fine Art in New York with Nelson Shanks, one of America's greatest 20th-Century painters. Timothy is a protégé of internationally renowned painter and author, Richard Schmid and has studied with him privately since 1997. Thies has also has taken workshops with Clyde Aspevig, Len Chmiel, and David Leffel, and at the Loveland Academy of Art he studied anatomy and sculpting with Jon Zahourek. In addition, since 1999 Thies has been a member of The Putney Painters, in Southern Vermont—the painting group founded by Nancy Guzik and Richard Schmid. He has also taught portrait and figurative workshops at several prestigious art schools, including the Scottsdale Artists' School in Arizona and has conducted numerous painting workshops in Arizona, Vermont, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Florida, Alabama and North Idaho. All he learned from those many accomplished artists and in those prestigious institutions, coupled with his own natural instincts for observing and sensing the "heart and soul" of any scene, explains the artistic mastery for which Timothy R. Thies is becoming famous nationwide. That in turn explains why his paintings have won many awards throughout America, including the Best of Show Award at The Bennington Center for the Arts and two awards in the top one hundred paintings of the Landscape Category selected by the International Art Renewal Center's 2nd Annual Salon Competition (which had more than 1,500 entries). Paintings by Timothy R. Thies have also been exhibited in many of America's most prestigious annual exhibitions, including the California Art Club Gold Medal Juried Exhibition held at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, the Northwest Rendezvous Exhibition, The Colorado Governor's Invitational, The American Society of Portrait Artist's competition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Boston International Fine Arts Show, The Copley Society of Boston, and the National Arts Club in New York. His paintings are in private and corporate collections nation wide including the collection of Jack Warner, founder of the Westervelt/Warner Museum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His paintings may also be seen in Trailside Galleries in Scottsdale AZ and Jackson Hole, WY, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in annual shows at West Wind Fine Art. All this exposure and recognition, and his increasing circle of collectors, has not altered Timothy R. Thies's essential values, nor diluted the freshness and intensity he brings to each new canvas. To view one of his magical paintings is not simply to become a participant in the scene, but also to witness a work created by a rare fine artist who understands the importance of reverence for life—and Nature.
