Richard Schmid

Throughout Richard Schmid's distinguished career, as painter and teacher, he has been a candid spokesman for what is known as the Grand Manner, a certain mingling of virtuosity and unrestrained joy in Art. Since 1958, Schmid has won nearly every major art award in the United States, including the prestigious American Watercolor gold medal. In 1987 he was honored with the $100,000 National Arts for the Parks award for his oil painting, "Mountain Stream -Rocky Mountain National Park."

In June of 2000, Mr. Schmid was the recipient of the John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the American Society of Portraits Artists Foundation. The award was presented by Richard Ormand, Sargent's grand nephew during a special awards ceremony hosted by The Portrait Society's Conference held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2005 Mr. Schmid was awarded the gold medal from The Portrait Society of America. He was also presented with an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Old Lyme, CT.

In 1998 Richard Schmid completed his third book, ALLA PRIMA- Everything I Know About Painting, published by STOVE PRAIRIE PRESS, LLC TM, which focuses mainly on painting from life. Now in its  8th printing, ALLA PRIMA has been sold to artists in 40 countries throughout the world as well as to artists, museums, libraries, and collectors in the United States.

West Wind Fine Art Gallery has represented his work since 1998.  Mr. Schmid's works were shown at a Retrospective Exhibition hosted by The Butler Institute of American Art in 2003. His paintings have also been exhibited by The Smithsonian Institution, The Thomas Gilcrease Museum,  The Colorado Historical Society, The Beijing Exhibition Center in China, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Palette and Chisel Academy, The National Academy of Design, The Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, VT, The Harvard Club of Boston, and The Boston International Fine Art Show.

At ceremonies hosted by the American Society of Portrait Artists in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000, Richard Schmid received the John Singer Sargent Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Throughout his career, Richard Schmid has promoted art education through his books, articles, workshops, seminars, and television presentations.
